exhaust system question
« on: July 18, 2006, 10:42:41 am »
I recently aquired a 94 golf 1.9 td.  The exhaust has been hacked and fixed a couple of times.  I want to run a straight 2.25 or 2.5" pipe from the turbo and eliminate the two mufflers.  Do I need a resonator or a staright though muffler?  Will this help fuel economy.  Theres also a small can -like oblect inline after the turbo that is stamper VW.  The guy I took it to yesterday said to leave it there and add the pipe after.  I noticed that this part of the pipe is 2.25"  and then when it hits the first muffler it gets smaller?????? this doesn't seem right to me.  Can someone chime in here.  I didn't think diesels needed back pressure.  I thought the better the flow through the better period.
Help please.
Out.
Greg

Diesel cams have no overlap, so no exhaust backpressure required or indeed desired.

Not sure about your other questions...

I think VW protects these engines from the driver's right foot three ways:
-Fuel govener in IP
-BOV on intake
-Restrictive exhaust

But I dont know what the can is or if the exhaust on a '94 is supposed to neck down at muffler.

Got the same engine in a '92 jetta, 2" front to back, no resonator or muffer. Works great, not too loud. GO for it!

A local fellow (House of Diesel) said the can was the cat for the system.  The next time the muffler breaks off I'll take it out to just befroe the first muffler and continue the 2.25 pipe straight out the back.  I'll let you know how it goes.  Who knows, if the price is right, I might get it done this monday while i'm in getting a new parking brake cable installed.
