New memebr and first post-
I may be in the minority but I really like the MB 240D motor, even at what, 55hp? So I'm wondering if anyone knows of a blown 240 motor. I'm just learning about diesels but I'm pretty sure the compression would have to be lowered, maybe custom piston squirters, but what about the injection pump? Is there any room to modify it?
Also, even though I like the comfort and build quality of the Benz, I'd like to drop the 240 motor in an old Volvo 140 series car (144 or 145 wagon). It'd be a little heavier but not too much (right?). These are also well-built, rugged, and IPD can provide a host of suspension upgrades.
Anyone?

Are you asking about the compression because you want to modify the car?
If so you will get some answers on here but you'd be better off on the mercedes sites or even
http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/groupee. Try the forums there, lots and lots of mercedes lovers.
Not that we don't want you here, just trying to increase your odds.

The MB 4 is fine, as is the 5 cylinder TD engine, but they are in no way as smooth or powerful, nor as efficient compared to the Volvo spec 6 cylinder Audi engine (D24T). That engine most likely will bolt right into a 140 including the transmission, and possibly drive shaft. Also, the D24T is very responsive to tuning and upgrades

The Benz 240D motor may not be that smooth, but if it was rebuilt with a turbo in mind, it could be balanced/blueprinted and compression reduced for the turbo. About the compression, I thought it was necessary to reduce the compression to account for the forced induction. Keep in mind, I have no real knowledge of the physics behind how turbos work beyond the "jist" of it.
I've heard not-so-good things about the Volvo diesels and how they will die a short life if driven in town for most of it's life. Plus, I assume it's heavier and thirstier. Even if the Merc 4 banger pushed 70hp, I'd be happy with it. I'm more interested with longevity and milage than with acceleration. I love both Mercedes and Volvo's but like the suspension tuning options, the availability of salvage parts, and the fact that it's a bunch lighter.

The D24 weighs 210KG / 470 LB with all acessories. The rear drop oil pan will likely present much less adaption obstacles than the front sump Benz. Adequate cooling for a diesel in the 140 will take some thought.

Is the D24 the same as the D24T? That weight is not too bad at all considering all the ancilliaries. I'll find out what the Benz motor weighs.

i posted a few questions at mercedesshop about puttin a turbo on my 240 motor and it seems like all the same issues as with any diesel. im just gonna go for it and keep the tuning mild and medium low egts and im confident it will be fine....

Let me know how it goes. I'm still into building one and either keeping it in a MB body or swapping it into a Volvo 140 body or even an e21 BMW (320i) and keeping the 4 speed.

I'd guess the turbo apparatus on the 'T' weighs over 10 LB

I know of a 240D engine, more then likely in need of work as it has 400k kms and was raced during the last phase of it's life. Where are you located?

The MB 240D engine is designated the OM616. This family consisted of the OM 615 (underbored 4 cylinder, 2000 cc - appeared int he MB 200D 123 series); the OM 616 (2399 cc, upto 72 bhp) saw duty on the 240D and the G Wagen, and the OM 617 5 cylinder (3000 cc, used on the 300D).
The OM616 has been adapted by some licensees to a turbo version (the pump replaced with a mechanical governor in place of the pneumatic governor on the original 616).
I have personally shoehorned the OM 616 into a Peugeot 505 sedan.
I have also used a Isuzu 2.4 diesel (4FG1) in a 505 wagon.
I have now added a Volvo 940 with a D24TIC (2383 cc, turbo intercooled diesel - vw made).

Don't bother with the OM616. If you want more power for your 240D, swap in a stock turbo OM617 from a 300D.
The compression does not need to be altered for turbocharging in the MB engines.
