my 1.6TD has a Garrett T-3 turbo - is this normal?

As the title says - is this a normal turbo for a 1.6TD?

bought the car as a project. Previous owner had just put on a new turbo. this weekend I took out the engine and tranny. Turbo has a badge that says it is built for VW/Audi. :?:  :?:

Is it garret t3 or t03
are they the same thing and are they the same turbo for 1.6 and 1.9
I can barely make out what appears to be the AR ratio on my turbo and it seems to say .9      I know little about turbos but isnt that kinda high for such a small engine or is it high because diesels can use higher AR ratios than gasoline engines

diesels love the extra air at low rpm.  gas engines love extra air at high rpm.

yea i sorta like the garret better,,iremoved my kkk on my 84,and installed the garret from an 86 td.,,i like it better than the kkk,,even though theylookclose,and supposidly the maps are close,,the garret seemed a lilsoft down low,came onstrong inmid,and up top,,,the kkk seemed good down low,,goodmid,,fell flat up top,,,,

cause im not too worried about low end,,,its not really lack of low end,,just seems a little laggy till it spools up down low,,,,its a diesel,its got plenty,,and on the old 1.6 it liked revs anyways,,,,why not use the garrett which felt more suited for  mid top  end power??,,,now using it on my tdi,,i think i need a bigger turbo,,,i got a buddy that builds audi stuff,,he said slap a k24 on it,,,,he builds custom intake and exhaust manifolds ,he can  fab up whatever you need too,,,,he is mainly an audi guy,,he is coolcause he has a cnc machine,thats a nice shop tool, http://westmotorsports.biz/

Thanks for all the great replies but now Im truly lost. My garrett turbo has the following       VW p/n 068-145-703bb      GAP p/n 465 384  1             S/N ma 0302a           I have no idea where this turbo came from now since these numbers mean nothing to me   oh and it also says made in England by Garrett for vw audi.   Is this still a T3 and is it supposed to be on a vw diesel  Or have I been duped

Hillfolk'r I am with you man I like the garretts better too, better top end. If you want soem manifolds I am making some custom ones right now let me know. I am gonan need some one to try em out soon

oh make it past tense,, i loved my garret,,it blew up at the track yesterday, ya probably saw the pics,, blew a big hole in the dp,,scared the  willies out of me,,,, i was doin about 95 or so,,,,,BOOM!!!!!!!,,im in the process of swapping my kkk onto it today,,,gonna get with a buddy to maybe see what he is talking about using a k24 from an audi 20v 5 cyl???it looks bigger,,,,,and he can make us up a custom manifold on his cnc machine(cut a flange),,,got some pics of your manifolds??

Yes it is a T-3. And yes 1.6TD's came factory with them. My '85 Quantum TD still has it's original T-3 as installed on the assembly line nearly half a million miles ago (yeah, it's finally getting tired!) No, you haven't been duped.
