Advice request

I'm looking at potentially picking up a 2003 Jetta TDI and would like some opinions.   It has a automatic and 660K KMs.   I don't like the auto, but my wife doesn't drive a stick and it's cheap.  What are the odds of having trans problems?  How much fuel mileage would I lose.  Not sure if this is a good idea as all my VW's have been manual MK2 units so far.

The auto will fail at some point. I have heard about 5mpg difference between the auto and manual. Mechanically similar to mk2 some stuff is different, mainly the computer and safety stuff.

I have an '02 Jetta Wagon with the automatic also because my wife does not like to drive manual.  For sure the automatics are weaker than the manuals, but the original trans in my '02 Jetta went 239,000 miles before losing reverse.  The used one that I installed has been flawless for the last 7,000 miles so far.  Most of the original ones went more than 100,000 miles which is probably above the design criteria and above what's considered 'normal' for many American automatics.  I also think a lot depends on how one drives.  If you consider the accelerator pedal an ON/OFF switch, then you'll kill an automatic quickly.  My wife and I are very easy on vehicles and so it has been a good match.

The oil pan of the auto rusts and slowly leaks fluid. I think this is a root cause of a lot of problems with the transmission as well as you are very limited in what kind of fluid can be used in it. Use Amsoil Signature which has the correct VW approval for this model. If there is any oil spots on transmission pan it will need replacement along with filter.
