1991 Jetta Mk2 Removing Tie Rod Assembly
« on: September 02, 2016, 04:53:20 pm »
I'm using Bentley.....my car has power steering.

Bentley says that the power steering box has to be removed in order to unscrew the inner tie rod end. (No way for me!!)
Apparently there is no lock nut on the inner with PS; so as to not damage the rack, it has to be held in vice to un-torque the inner end. There's a picture of them doing that in Bentley.

Is this true?? I know it's by the book, but I saw a guy on Youtube use the special tool and an impact wrench to break the inner end loose on a 2000 Jetta. That steering box must have really gotten a banging as the inner end was secured with RED Locktite. The guy pointed that out. He didn't seem to do any damage and he had one heck of time getting it off!!

So what's the scoop in this???

Thanks

Still, I would like to know if anyone has had luck doing this job without removing the power steering box.

Thanks, Thomas

I did this on my 85 golf with power steering and haven't had any issues. I used a inner tie rod tool from harbor freight and a breakover bar. Worked well. If someone knows of an issue this might cause I would be interested in knowing about it.
Hope this helps,
Austin.
