Will an '04 cummins 5.9 filter work on a '971.9 AAZ?

Will the filter for my '04 5.9 Cummins work on my '97 1.9AAZ?
Yes, the cummins filter is longer, but not sure what/if there is anything different about the guts of one vs. the other...

Not sure where to find the properties of each?

not sure, but just to be on the safe side, i'd go with one made for the engine.
i'm sure there's probably not a whole lot of difference between the one you want to use and the OEM one for the AAZ's, but just to be safe.

Does anyone have a part number for the OEM bosch filter?

I have a Fram on the engine now and just as soon get rid of that sooner rather than later...

WIX, in addition to the fact that they make great filters, have a ton of specific filter information on their website. You might try punching in your 2 different applications at   http://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/filterlookup.aspx?   Once you get the filter # for an application, you can use its hyperlink to get a detailed description of the filter unit itself. IIRC the VW has a 3/4"-16 thread, while the Dodge/Cummins is a 1"-16 thread... if so, it's too big. Note the gasket i.d./o.d. sizes also, whether it has anti-drainback valve, canister length, etc.

On my VW diesels I've been using WIX #51714 (original use: FIAT/IVECO large diesels up to 8.1L) for many years; it carries at least half a quart more capacity than the oem VW filters. :)  Price tends to be about the same as on the German filters from Mann, etc.

You will probably be fine with the Cummins filter.

The stock VW filters are pretty poor - they let through quite a bit. They're basically the minimum filter that could be installed.

I dunno....

The numbers for the Fleetguard LF3451 aren't all that impressive
Lf3451 is a direct replacement for the VW filter and probably built to the same specification...

Meh, I get a deal on Fleetguard filters....
They still aren't as bad as Fram though......

The VW part number for the only filter is 068 115 561B. I say this because I've driven VW diesels in high mileage and high performance scenarios since 1984. I've used them all, had a few pop out, has a few leak and had a few filter VERY poorly. Final scenario is GET THE FRAM OFF THERE IMMEDIATELY. It's the worst of the lot. WIX is not bad, but nothing compares to the MANN filter sold by the dealership. I buy them 6 at a time and he gives me wholesale pricing. My highly modified AAZ in my Rabbit Pickup will show over 100 psi on a cold start and that's enough to seriously damage an inferior filter.

The Fram is off and the Fleetguard LF3451 is on...
The LF 3451 is the correct replacement for the OEM VW filter.
