TTY pressure-plate to crank bolts: what do YOU torque them to?

I read about every post on the web regarding the "correct" torque for the six TTY bolts that hold a MK2 pressure-plate to the crank hub. (6-bolt pp version, obviously.)

There was no "final word", since "official" references differ.... some folks do one way, some do the other. So, if you have done a clutch-job, what did torque them to?

Most of us are already aware of the discrepancy between different versions of the Bentley manuals (and even within a manual). No need to quote them here, just what you have personally done (and why, if you are inclined).


Even if we can't agree, we can at least see how many prefer one way over another.

I think I do 44+1/4. I follow whatever my Bentley specs. I don't have it with me right now so I will vote later once I check.

I was about to say what I did for those six bolts on my 1.6 engines --- then, I figured out what TTY means...  All of mine are old enough to not have torque-to-yield bolts.

With my old engines, none of them had pressure plates become loose on the crank.  There was no indication that any had been worked on before I did.  Also, none of the ones I tightened had any problem.  So, I think the factory torque for the non-TTY bolts is reasonable; namely 55 ftlb.

Personally, I detest TTY bolts.  My head-bolts used to be TTY; I went to the bolt store and bought generic replacements.  :-)

re use  22 and extra 2/3 turn. ended up selling that car no problems in 5-6k miles...

I got new pp/crank bolts, they have the blue locker on the threads.

I went 60nm on the PP/crank bolts. I did the 1/4 turn two stages (1/8, 1/8). (It was hard to tell if they reached yield, since the engine was swinging on the hoist.)

The final turning force after the 1/4 turn was ~122nm and none felt like they were ready to snap. (My bigger concern was stripping the crank hub, it does not seem to be hardened.)


The used flywheel bolts threaded loosely into the pp, so I used some blue locker on those too and turned them to 20nm.

 I voted 22 and 1/4 turn for the TTY bolts

 I keep the shoulderless bolts off the old engines and reuse them on NA engines.

Why is there such confusion and wild differences on the torque specs reported here?  My Bentley for 85-92  under manual transmission and clutch p 9-43 says:


Flywheel to pressure plate (15 ft lbs). These are the ones that needs a 9 mm 12 point socket.


Pressure plate to crankshaft 55 ft lbs plus 1/4 turn (90 degrees). These are the big hex bolts that needs a 17 mm socket.


Are these correct?

17mm sounds big, but yeah the torque values sound right.
