33MPG!?!? WHat gives??
« on: August 11, 2004, 02:26:59 pm »
ALright....I didnt bother checking how bad the MPG was when I had the close ratio gear box in her but I put an FN code tranny in her, filled her up, and am now almost empty.  Looks like im going to end up getting about 32 MPG on this tank of Diesel.  That is entirely unacceptable. THe motor is a fresh rebuild (1.6l TD, has about 2000 miles on her now), power seems good, the vavle shims were all redone....what gives?  My dad seems to think that the pump is a piece.  Im thinking that ill try readjusting the timing (she smokes a little bit) and keeping my foot off the pedal a little more.

Any other suggestions?  I used to get 52mpg out of my 86 N/A golf and about 43-44 out of my 83 TD jetta.

Also....Ive got another TD pump that needs to be rebuilt.  Anyone that you guys recommend?

alignment? wheel bearings? tires?

how heavy are you on the throttle?

is that all city driving?

what chassis is this?

keeping it in 5th when cruising helps a lot.. but you got good milage with the other two cars... i assume your driving habits are similar?

The car is basically new.  Everything in the front end has been replaced.  Its an 84 Rabbit.  Driving habbits are the same in the jetta as in the rabbit.  Mostly Highway.  From what I can tell the odometer is correct.

Any other ideas?  33mpg sucks  :(

If I was a bettin' man, I'd put my money on brakes. I recently saw an increase of approx 75 km/ tank after doing a bunch of brake work. I figure it was either the calipers or emergency brake cables.

Both my diesel rabbits odometers are not accurate. Speedos either.  Stock size wheels. Based on driving next to a caddy with a digital spedometer, and the highway KM markings.

Like I said....everything is new...including the brakes.  :D   I just changed the tranny fluid tonight over to synthetic..not becasue of better MPG...cause I was ready to swap.  I doubt that will have any significant effect.

next thing i would do is drive along with a friend with a known-to-be-good odometer.... or drive a confirmed distance... and check and see what the odo tells you. its proberly off, wouldn't be the 1st time.

A TD shouldn't smoke.  Perhaps your injectors are bad.
88 Jetta TD....sold for $1000, bought an 06 Cobalt, clearing out the diesel jetta stuff now
