Power steering pump on 1.6TD engines?
« on: March 01, 2014, 03:46:20 pm »
I have done a bit of research and it seems that a power steering bracket from a mk3 golf will apparently not fit due to some missing mount points on the 1.6TD (mines a JR engine). When I got my JR engine the crank pulley is double V belt with 1 V driving the water pump and alternator and the other V? this engine came from a mk2 CL so I find it unlikely it was Aircon over here in the uk! But I thiought it might actually be for power steering. There was no bracket on the engine, but I thought whats the deal?

Just thinking of doing a swap on my mk3 golf and putting in a rebuilt and 'adjusted' 1.6TD in it and wondered what the options were for keeping the power steering and using the bits from my mk3 1.8 engine.

The pumps themselves are different in terms of mounting points too...  So you can't fit the Mk3 pump in to the 1.6 bracket.

That said, the 1.6 pump works fine with the Mk3 steering rack and hoses.  I just yanked mine out a week ago but I've been running with exactly that setup for the 6 years that I've had my car.  If you find a pump and bracket off of any 1.6 it should do you fine.

OK so been looking on line, the mk2 and mk3 brackets look very similar. Theres like a metal flat piece with a couple of holes in that looks the same almost then a bracket that hangs off the alternator bracket.

I mean ideally I'd be in favour of dropping the alt bracket/power steering bracket and belt setup onto the 1.6TD but its a serp type belt.

Just trying to find an easy way to mix and match without the addtion of too many purchases. I'm up for a little fabrication mind if push comes to shove.
