Another turbo selection thread - 1.5L Franken engine.
« on: February 08, 2013, 01:02:22 pm »
OK - I think that a lot of you guys know what I'm building (1.5L bottom end, TD block, 1.9 head).

This is for a land speed record attempt - street driving isn't important whatsoever.

It's time to get serious about turbo selection.  I'm learning as fast as I can, but still not anywhere near the knowledge level of most of you.

One of my next steps will be to fabricate an exhaust header/manifold, similar to what ROR 2.0 is running (StreetToys 2000 style header)

I've been having thoughts about a VNT, with some kind of manual controller, even if it's not possible to adjust when the vehicle is running. (like a fixed nozzle, but adjustable by wrench under the hood).

Something along the lines of a GT2056 family is looking fairly promising.

Please help with recommendations.

Thanks,
Steve.

i suggested find turbo then build manifold to fit on pg 1 i think.. :P

i still think vnt.. a heater cable to operate it, they have a lever/eye like a heater valve for operation..

i think vnt better then waste gate as it varies turbine speed vs boost level

I like the idea of ROR tube style but I would want to shorten it. The longer the tube the more time the EGT has to drop. Heat and volume/rpm spool the turbo so I would want it hot when it gets there. Short of runners as possible, no bigger than the exhaust ports in diameter.

As for turbo selection Trevorb is the guy with the knowledge I think on here. I also like CRSMP5 idea of the VNT on a cable or use a libbydiesel style controller. That Alcaid guy has probably the best matched turbo to our engines now. So the list if this were me would be:
1. the one Alcaid runs
2. 2256vk - fedex truck mercedes engine
3. 2359
4. maybe this one - http://malonetuning.com/?p=525

This

Came from this turbo

It is a T40E/T3 hybrid with a .63 AR hotside.

Check out this thread for information on mechanical VNT control.
