anyone else tried this exhaust paint?
« on: April 30, 2012, 06:06:17 pm »
I spent some intimate time with google trying to find out which header paint was the best.  well after surfing a few different forums, it turned out to be vht.  so i bought a can of primer and a can of paint.  i polished everything i could reach in side the exhaust mani and i port matched the runners to the gasket(didn't take much)  then i used a stone and ground all the rust off the exhaust mani and turbine housing.  Sprayed it all down with brake cleaner and I then sprayed on a few light coats of primer just enough to make it all white, then a few very light coats of the paint... just enough so u can see u made it all wet.  then i cleaned off the mating surfaces with acetone and threw it in the oven next to my dinner to cure it all up (following the directions on the can.)  looks pretty sweet, a friend of mine has the exhaust on his plane painted with this and it has held up for 3+ years, hopefully i will have the same luck.  anyways i think it looks sweet in white how do you guys feel?

also it will go with this stuff... just a few more baby steps towards my slow slow build haha

anyone have tips for getting the over squeezed rtv out from around the intake elbow/intake mani mating area?  i spent time making sure all the holes matched up, i'd hate for the silicone to ruin my work, doesn't seem to pick out too easy... i have better luck with my boogers.

i just used a half can of black paint on my mk2 header. didnt prime the metal tho, didnt think it needed it. have had the header on the car for over a month, and i did the on-car paint bake method too, because mom would have shart a BUICK if i would have been cooking a header in her $$$ gas over...

even having to cure it on the car was NOT BAD tho.. its been holding up GREAT. and i have been TRYING to get the paint to burn off the manifold, or first couple inches of the header tubes maybe, but its doing GREAT.. not even discolored..

i had painted a mk1 header with some BBQ paint (what a joke) and tried to cure it on the car too.. needless to say, almost every spec of that paint flaked off the header, and i was left with bare, clean metal after that.. there was a LITTLE paint left on the collector, but not much.

basically, this is some of the best header paint i have personally ever used.. its called VHT for a reason (VERY HIGH TEMP)

it has silica, and ceramic suspended in the paint also..

but for ~$10 a can, it better work pretty darn good!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

good to hear.. mine did turn a bit creamy colored instead of white but still looks good, i may have needed more coats who knows.  also for the pricing, i get employee discount at napa, and i didn't even think to check there until after i bought it haha. i paid 10 for each can from amazon, i checked napa i could have gotten them for 5 a can... damn it.  i didn't even think napa would have them

I used the flat black header paint just about a year and a few months ago now. I put it on the pipe between my turbos. It got pretty beat up during the whole assembley proccess of the motor and finally went on missing around half the paint that it began with haha.
But the good news is it still looks the exact same as it did when I put it on. The paint that wasnt removed from physicall contact during assembley is all still in place.
