Interesting marketing concepts. No GTDs were offered in North America, but, by the descriptions above, it sounds as though a better intercooler, minor head work, pump mods, and probably a free-flowing exhaust would have contributed seriously worthwhile improvements in power. Is that a reasonable assessment?

It’s too bad that VW doesn’t see fit to offer its best economy cars with TD power, at least here in US.

Mark(The Miser)UK, was that intercooled Quantum/Passat a factory-offering, or an owner mod?

It's in a 1987 Volkswagen official official brochure. It talks about the intercooled  1.6 engine for the Passat and Golf, and lists the 10hp increase. It shows a picture of an inline engine [in what must be a Quantum, because in 1988 the mk3 Passat became transverse] with an Audi styled intercoooler beside the intake filter in line with the radiator. Never seen one in the flesh, but there are holes in the front member of all Quantums for what I had thought was an extremely long radiator...

What interior came with the early GTD compared with the early TD?[/color]

standard seats, not recarro sort, but with choice of 2 different cloth. GTI dashboard (with glove box) all in black (no chrome lines on vents or clock surround). Long arm rests, speaker pods with map holders on the door panels. Sort of greyish plastic paterned headliner. The famous black 5 speed golf ball, lettering in orange. 4 branch steering wheel with "turbo diesel" emblem in the middle. center console but no dials. Large black body side trim (like the cabs but without the chrome center strip). GTI wheel arches. front "GTD" emblem on front grill and "GOLF GTD" emblem on tha back.
Options were: twin headlights and corresponding grill, alloy wheels, 4 doors or 2 doors (with reclining normal seats)
