OK, so I'm still waiting for my Bentley's for my 1996 Golf TD to ship
, so I'll ask you guys:
Anyone know how to get the door sill trim pieces off? Do they just snap on/off, or are there some hidden screws somewhere?
The wiring to my rear passenger-side door speaker has a break in it somewhere, so even if I have to re-run the leads, I'd like to know how to get the trim off, since I'm assuming that's where the harness runs - from the dash, along the door sill, up the B-pillar and into the door?
open the door and you'll see the bellows for the wiring. carefully peel the rubber bellows off the connector. you will must likely see broken wires there
to take the door trim off- remove the lock knob at the top, remove the grab handle outside half by carefully getting a flat screwdriver between the two plastic halfs. there are 2 phillips machine screws -remove both. push the lock handle bezel by sliding it forward. there may be a small phillps screw behind it. then remove the 6 screws holding the panel, 2 at the front edge, 2 on the bottom[you will have to feel or bend way over to see them and 2 more at the rear edge. They might be 3 or something mm

D'oh! I never even considered the obvious wear point! I was too busy worrying about a bug-hunt.
Thanks!
That's exactly where the break was, both wires. I spliced in a little spacer stretch, but when it warms I'm going to re-run the wires.
Is that a strain-relief in the pillar or a full-on connector?
It's a full connector that can easily be detached by grabbing it at the b-pillar end and twisting it and turning counter-clockwise. When re-attaching, be careful to line it up properly. Detaching can make repairs easier, as there's less strain.
