Camshafts. Need some help.
« on: March 01, 2010, 01:35:54 am »
According to VAGcat a Passat from -95 with a 1Z engine uses a camshaft with part# 026109101A and so does a Golf from -85 with a JR 1.6 engine and some AAZ:s from various years.

I´ve read some other posts about camshafts and some say that AAZ is different from 1Z?

What is true?  ::)  I might aswell take the valvecover of and check what cam I use right now.

I also have a cam from an AEF engine. 1.9 NA. Is that one even better to use for a TD? Does a NA cam have longer duration?
I know my brother uses NA cams in his 1.8T Audi A4 for more hp.

Can someone chime in. I hate to be outside in this neverending winter swapping cams for no improvement at all.

Not related to your question but I too had wondered about the different cams. I had one from a na 1.6 so after a cam follower broke on my 1.9 IDI and damaged the cam lobe a bit - I asked here and tried it. The general consensus was it would work as there would only be slight differences - I can't say notice any difference at all.
I guess one way would be to try it, spin it by hand before starting it up of coarse, and if it spins freely - starter up and see.
If you can't take advice - then you can't be helped!

from what i remember, the 1.6 cams have the best profile of stock vw diesel cams.
