1.6 Turbo pump on 1.6 N/A engine???
« on: December 25, 2009, 12:25:14 pm »
Newbie to forum...5 years with a 1982 diesel Vanagon (AAZ 1.9 n/a with 35k miles).
New owner of a 1981 "Caddy" 1.6 n/a (60k on rebuild),... also 1 1984 Quantum Turbo diesel sedan (65k on re-build)(5k on injector pump)....Parts Car.

1.Can I use the Quantum's Turbo injector pump on the Caddy's 1.6 n/a with no issues.

2.Can I use it with the n/a injectors or do I (HAVE) to use the turbo injectors.( I know there is an opening
 pressure difference in the 2).
3. Does the fuel screw need to be adjusted a little LOWER.
4. Any performance gains or mpg loss?
5. I should be able to just block-off the turbo to pump valve, on top of pump, install, and time it, right???

The Caddy's pump is leaking (abundantly) at cold-start lever and I don't have the $ to re-seal it, right nw.
I am in the middle of a new timing belt, water pump, hoses, and gaskets change project. Just want to get it zipped back up and on the road. I will re-seal the n/a pump sometime soon. Any (sound)advise on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for the info. I'm pulling the Turbo pump tommorrow and installing on the n/a. I hope to be pulling the Quantum's Turbo, intake, oil lines (modified?), injectors, etc.( within a month or 2) and installing on the N/A. I will be sourceing the Jetta exhaust and down-pipe from a friend.
A Franken-Turbo Motor is in the works. I will add a Mocal sandwhich plate and a Setrab Volvo oil cooler. I am considering the Quantum's dual-fan set-up (in the Caddy)...(if I can make it fit.) Both have a/c so wiring should be good for it. More oil and water cooling. The Quantums dual-shrowd ( minus the belted fan)  seems like a good spot for a future intercooler or oil cooler relocation. The Mk 4 dual-fan seems like a do-able, thinner and lighter mod. also. I will keep the forum informed of the progress. I'll pull the Quantum's long-block (65k) soon and seal it for storage. I am doing the Franken Thing because 1. I really don't won't to pull 2 motors, right now. Winter, out-side, alone, itching to drive my new caddy. 2.The Caddy's n/a engine (60k miles on biggger-bore re-build) pulls and runs stronger than any 1.6 n/a, I've driven. Adding the turbo set-up is all I'll really ever NEED for my speed kick. I have no plans for chasing 1.6's Turbo's available speed. 15psi will probally be my max.....  MPG, and engine longevity will be my main concerns. 3. I need to get rid of the Quantum body for space concerns. I've been (daily driving)( and quarterly fixing) a Vanagon diesel (4-spd) (1.9 AAZ n/a) (25 mpg) for 5 years, so the Caddy's quickness and 40+ mpg is long-awaited.  I'll list the Quantum left-over bits and pieces later. I'll also be selling the Van this Spring. I'd love to hear anyone's experience with the Franken-Motor set-up.
