1.6TD vs. AAZ pump
« on: December 11, 2009, 09:00:14 pm »
I know this has been covered in pieces all over these forums, but in a nutshell what are the exact differences internally between the 1.6TD and the AAZ injection pump?

Here are my observations on the exterior, or what I have read about the insides:

-Most AAZ pumps seem to have auto-cold start vs. manual on 1.6.
-AAZ has no "smoke screw"
-AAZ usually has a softer LDA spring
-AAZ has lame-O boost pin
-AAZ usually has 20mm shaft, but not exclusively.
-Some AAZ have two-piece pulley
-AAZ has larger (read longer) housing for dynamic advance plunger.  What I dont know is how different the actual advance plunger and springs really are.
-AAZ has different camplate....with higher lift I think.

So what am I missing?  Are the high-side injection pressures higher on the AAZ?  Is the control lever (inside the pump that moves the control collar) different?  Are the governors different?

Partly what I am getting at is what would it take to make a 1.6TD pump worthy for a AAZ motor?  The 1.6TD pump already has a superior LDA.  If you put a AAZ camplate and advance mechanism in, what's left to change?

I may be over-simplifying this.  There's probably lots of minute differences that you could only notice if you have both pumps apart on your workbench, side by side.
I have a AAZ pump enroute that needs to be gone through, so maybe I can pull both pumps apart simultaneously to see what's up.
For the record this is purely for curiosity's sake for right now.
