I don't know how many JDM's you have out that way but here (west coast) they are everywhere.

2.7td is much more appropriate for that size vehicle and most of these imports are in pretty good shape. The RHD is no issue in case that concerns you.

You could probably souce just a drivetrain for cheaper and less work than modding an aaz to work.

God, I hate you guys... ;) 

Down south here in the land of the free, we would be thrown in Guantanamo Bay prison for trying to import a truck like that.
Our only option is something that's 25 years old or more. Some diesel Land Cruisers are making their way here from Oz and NZ finally, and the occasional Land Rover.
As of this year, the first Syncros are turning 25, hopefully we'll start getting some interesting ones from Europe.

Has anyone considered converting an Isuzu? I always liked the mk1 Troopers, (there are some diesel versions floating around), and the Amigo/Rodeo are decent little trucks.

JDM rodeos come in diesel, and low and behold they were made as far back as 84.
