another 1.6 VNT question..

I was out driving my Toyota again tonight and just can not figure out why the lack of power. This is a 1.6 NA w/ a VNT15. It has amazing power when taking off, just not while driving. Currently, I have the veins a little over half open and it will make 12 psi easily before shifting into 3rd, closed it will make 20+ psi scary quick. The problem is the power dies off quickly once I try to get over 25 mph, meaning it takes forever to actually get going anywhere. I'm scared someone is going to rear end me. Remember, this is still w/ the NA pump turned up to a slight brown haze at .75 throttle. Should I accept this w/ this pump or do I need to install a turbo pump? I'm sort of leaning to the turbo pump as it seems it needs more fuel, yet it makes crazy boost w/ the current NA pump. Governor issue perhaps? Problem is I have no tach, so I have no clue what rpm I am shifting at. Shifting by ear.
The injectors are the stock 135s that it came w/ and they all seem to run fine, perhaps they need a rebuild? I am at a total lost now. I really want to keep this engine in as it runs so nice, yet if it can not make enough power to just move me down the road I'm forced to put the 1Z in that I was originally planning to install.

A td pump will definitely be an upgrade. The NA pump doesn't have any fuel enrichment under boost so you're stuck with the same amount of fuel at any boost pressure. The TD pump also has a 10mm head compared to 9mm for the NA.

I assumed as much, but I keep seeing others using the NA pump w/ a VNT.

Are you sure it's brown smoke and not black??? Brown isn't normal.
A TD pump will just limit fuel off boost while a NA pump turned up high will belch lots of smoke until the boost comes on.

if you dont have a vain control system, its best to just leave the vains completely open. and you get the best performance that way also. i dont know why you cant get any boost out of that thing, my car would pump out 35 psi boost with a VNT17 and a n/a fuel pump. it didnt even have the smoke screw collar taken off. throw the TD pump on there, it makes a world of difference.

..Oh, it will make boost alright, hence the reason I have the veins wired about .75 open. Although when fully open, 1 or 2 psi it seems. I guess I will try it w/ the veins fully open and see if there is a difference, else it's time for the turbo pump.
Also, I have the timing set to 1.00mm. Is this too much for the NA pump? Should I retard it some?

Sounds like you got the same problem as me, everyone on here says with the vanes fully opened you should be able to get 20psi easy, of course you'd need lot's of fuel.
I can get about 4psi fully opened so I've closed the vanes about a third of the way so now I can get 13psi w/o smoke, strangely thought it still feels gutless.

my car was never gutless. ive always been able to make around 30 psi boost with my turbo and ***TY fueling. like fuel screw backed way off.. you guys have worn out turbos or something. because my turbo is worn out, has shaft play, and the seals leak, but it still makes lots of boost. the only thing my turbo pump did was really make it come alive once the LDA starts throwin' down.

Yup na pump, but I've turned the fuel way up so it'll smoke like a chimney until the boost comes up then it cleans up. It doesn't have near the power I was hoping for.

your guys's turbos should light almost instantly. are either one of you running exhaust systems? i got 2.5 on mine with a flowmaster, and the muffler took away about 5psi boost.

...2.5" that dumps out under the passenger seat, for the time being. A little loud so I want to get some kind of exhaust on it.

yea, you guys both should be good to go. i still dont know why you guys are experiencing such problems. my install was so easy and straight forward. only thing that plagues me is the damn intercooler boots always poppin off.
