New here, Few Questions!!!
« on: October 23, 2009, 10:36:47 am »
my 4dr 1.6td (mk2 Jetta) motor was slowly dying, hard starting etc etc etc... so it was in need of a refresherr. its my Daily so i couldnt have downtime while i worked on the motor. so i found a deal on a mk2 coupe 1.6td and snapped it up for the motor.... i took it home at the beginning of the week and since then ive pulled the motor and trans out and have completed the following....

-Honed the block
-New Rings
-New 1.9 metal HG
-2 new injectors (they were leaking, other 2 were good still)
-4 new glo-plugs (reg maintenace i guess)
-New timing belt & tensioner (no idea when it was previously done, old tensioner still spun but better safe then sorry)
-New "half" waterpump
-New OEM Clutch and PP (stock spec, not sure if that was a good idea....)
-Freshly built Giles Pump
-Yes, i did the governor mod as well  >8\
-Checked the Turbo and its TIGHT no play whatsoever

NOW... to my questions..... yes i have searched and all i come up with is a webpage that syas "the new forums are up" sooo.... any help?

1. The stock downpipe looks hella restrictive... (ive read this everywhere that its crappy etc etc) after looking into an aftermarket solution i have found that TT makes a 2.25'' downpipe but want 300USD for it. i want to go to a 2.5'' system from the turbo back... any ideas where to get one? J S Performance came to mind but i googled em and there site is down and they are no longer on this site?

2. Anyone running one of these motors intercooled? any big noticeable gains?

3. If/when i go 2.5'' turbo-back with no resonators, no mufflers etc... will it sound like a tractor? hahaha that might get annoying...

thats all i can think of for now.... any info our guidance into what im looking for would be AWESOME!

cheers,
Justin

Most on here are building our own DP. Check the Faq or general or maybe just go to the home and search for Build Threads. In there just about everybody that built one will be in there. Smoking eddy, Lord Verminard, and 53Willys I think had them in their threads. Basically if you buy a 180 degree J bend in the tubing you want, get a flange that will bolt up, and a flex section then you just cut and weld. Lord V just did his and for never welding before it is awesome. 2.5" or 3" is what most have done on here.

Intercooling is something alot have done here and I want to. Anything from MKIII intercoolers to saab blackstone and aftermarket have been put in. Again search and faq is your friend.

Most on here say the turbo is restrictive enough that the exhaust gas is quieted enough with no muffler. I don't know yet what it sounds like on a TD without one personally, but an NA there is no way I would run without one...much worse than any tractor I have used.

Also check out the faq thread called make your 1.6TD a faster car.

straight pipe exhaust sounds great! i have the tt 2.25 DP into their 2.5 from the dp back. It is neither too loud or obnoxious on long drives....in fact i love the sound so much i almost never listen to music. plus you can hear the turbo spoolin so well!! a little loud at 20psi boost but not a bad loud!

TT are awesome to deal with as well. my pipe was at my door about three days after i ordered it. I am 45mins south west of victoria so i thought that was pretty good.

with a giles pump go easy until you change your exhaust.

what turbo do you have? how much boost?

get a good air filter as well. sound will be much nicer

A stock clutch with the motor puttin down 120 plus at the wheels and tons of torque will not last long. I put one of the clutch springs through the transmission case after i got the giles pump while i was out in port renfrew. I still made it home somehow...even to work the next day. I have a sachs clutch now and it rules.
i think its probably tougher than the actual tranny.

I don't have an intercooler but am most likely going to get one or go water meth injection soon.

If you find dead links in the forum click the report to moderator button and write "deal links" in the comment section and we'll fix it.

Richmond69er,

I have a PassengerPerformance 3" downpipe (unfortunately I don't think Dave is making them anymore).

I have a custom 2.25 from the downpipe to the back with a FlowMax high flow muffler at the back.

It sounds great for the first hour of a trip.  At idle you can hear the turbo.  I use it as my daily commuter vehicle.  If my drive were over an hour I would be putting a resonator or a better muffler in it.

Good luck

i have shot passenger performance a call and left a message about the DP...
if they wont do it for me then i guess ill have to make my own.

as of now its still running the stock turbo.

I have been looking into the GTD intercoolers, someone said they could get me one cheap... anyone running em? is it not enough for what im looking to do?

the ultimate goal here is to have a daily car that is putting down 125whp+

I think you would be better off by using a front mounted IC. The GTD IC is mounted "sort off" on the gearbox with plastic pieces to bring air to it. Not totaly convinced about it's performance. If you don't have all the ducting then you're just cooling the air with hot air  ::)
