T/D pump ready to instal {I hope}
« on: October 15, 2009, 05:01:52 pm »
I've been planning on getting my T/D pump I rebushed and sealed last Winter tested and put back on the car when I got laid off in Sept.  I re-bushed and re-sealed it back last Winter but I never could get it to start even though after I took it back apart and checked for being 180 out and a few things like that I could find nothing wrong and it would shoot fuel out the discharge nozzles.  I got it back out today and clamped it in the vise, put some fuel lines on it with a filter and had a spare set of injector lines and injectors laying around and put them on too {1 at a time) of course with the remaining 3 shooting in some clear line back into the fuel can supply.  I took the solenoid out and checked it and it seems fine and does let the fuel flow and shut off as it should.  I can spin the pump with a good 3/8 drill and it seems to work fine shooting fuel out each injector line firing an injecor when it is attached to each line one at a time with the spray varying with thottle position and actualy not leaking either and I really ran this thing a lot.  The solenoid seems to work as it should, the throttle seems to work as it should and it doesn't leak and the advance lever will change the timing when moved.  This thing seems like it should fire right up when I put it on the car but I thought the same thing last ear too as it all seemed to check out fine then also.  Is there anything that I could possibly have wrong with the pump itself to keep the engine from starting?  The pump originaly ran good with it timed at 1.0 when the engine was rebuilt but leaked terrible so I put the N/A pump on while I worked on the T/D one and after I couldn't get it to run on the rebuilt T/D pump I've been just using the N/A one.  I'll post back if I get it too run but I can't imagine what could possibly be wrong with it after seeing it fire injectors and it is in time internaly with the lug on the cam part aligned with the key in the shaft.  I'll probably try it this weekend.  Does anyone have any thoughts of what else to check while it's off,  I did mark the throtle shaft before it was torn down the first time, it did have it's own index marks on it and I re-installed the same way and is working the throttle so it seems. ::)

I know you said that it is all timed correctly internally but external confirmation doesn't hurt.  Turn it by hand and make sure that the port for the #1 injector squirts when the timing mark is at the top of the pump.
Thanks for that suggestion, I'm deffinately going to check it like that in the morning before I start the swap.  That was one of the concerns I had originaly when it wouldn't start but upon disasembly again I did have it right but I am going to check to verify that way too, I never thought about checking it like that.
