I like everything about it except the purple steering wheel cover. How big is the cone filter? That is what I want to run in mine and looks like it fits well.
The only thing that needs done in the engine area looks like you need to put that valve cover breather away and route it into the intake tube behind that nice big dual cone air filter. Dakotakid has told me time and again that the oil vapors need to be in there for the valves to be lubed and not wear as fast. It makes sense and that is the way VW always did it, so you might want to think about that before your valves tell you to

I couldn't agree more about the valve cover.  I realized that was a bad move when i saw all the exhaust vapors that were comming out of the valve cover breather.  I am planning on doing that asap.  I don't know what size the cone filter is, I got it off craigslist for a song.  I think it's probably about 8 inches.  Just kidding about my grandfather. He thinks the steering wheel cover  looks like *** too.

Your Grandfather obviously has good taste What does he think about the scoops?  No really you have a nice truck, have fun with it anyway you can and as long as you can.  Hoods are cheap for these things if you want to change it back anyway.  Maby a wider and lower scoop in the middle

Nice caddy! I have same one with the "baby poop brown", and the wood trim interior. Except I paid about 1500 dollars more than yours and has rust because I live in a salt state. I wish I could have found a good deal like you did but oh well. I think you should keep the color. you could probably just give it good buff job and if you dont like the interior replace it with a black one it might save you some time and money. I also have some similar plans for mine but I am currently "restoring it" piece by piece. ( some floor rust and passenger side rain tray leaking into the fender wells put a big rust hole in it.) Yeah I've been finding out that "restoring" takes a hell of a alot of money and time. Both of which I don't have. So good job on your progress.

i would have liked a wider and lower one in the middle, kind of like the scummins has, but I figured I needed the fresh air over the intercooler and of course there is no place in the center for the cooler.  Of course, factory air aside, the best place is in the front.  My wife didn't have a problem with me spending a couple thousand on the truck, as long as it had ac

There is an air dam attached to the underside of the hood that seals off the intercooler from the engine bay and forces the air through.  It works pretty good for a hillbilly. (yeah, those are the ozarks mountains in the background of the photo's.   I'd imagine hillfolkr would approve, i'm starting to think we are birds of a feather.

thanks for the kind words.  I live in a salt state somewhat too and this is probably the only 81 caddy in this state that isn't rusted.  I asked about that and he told me that the old fellow just refused to drive until the snow was gone so the truck sat in the garage and didn't see any salt.  still doesn't explain why the paint is oxidized    I don't think I will keep the color though.  I saw rabbit on roids flat black paintjob and i saw my future.  I do think i'll add a flat clearcoat and avoid the constant cleaning chores
I have the rain tray problem as well. I just spotted it while I was moving my fuel filter into the wheelwell.  They are clogged up and holding water.  It's always something.  I'm wondering if I will ever get it all sorted out.  Please post some pics of your resto.  we are all curious
