Got my 91 1.6td engine donor running... 4 bad glow plugs, tore the diesel lines from the tank while loading/unloading... Whoops - bit of a scramble when I added a few gallons of diesel & can of seafoam... Lets just say it wasn't an easy task getting her running
Pretty sure the IP is going to need serious work; doesn't quite sound right to me - anyone hazard a guess as to what I need to do?

Note the big hunks of carbon on the ground... Those weren't there before I started cranking. Pretty sure the smoke screw's been turned way up - this was after about 5-6 minutes of idling and the high idle kicking off...

Anyone care to hazard a guess into the direction I need to go? Engine is going to repower an 87 toyota 4runner - Debating how much of the engine I'll need to dig into to get her working properly.

go with a D24T... ive always wanted to do a diesel swap into one of my toyotas, but i felt the 1.6 was a bit under powered for a 4000 pound vehicle. and those 2.4 litre inline 6 vw diesels have like 120 horse stock or something like that. thats more than a stock 22r. and WAY MORE torque.

Yeah no, was hard enough to find this engine... No clue what a D24T would even come in - but I'm not spending another year chasing a different engine.
I'm not worried about the power levels - 4runner was fine (for me) on power with the tired 22RE, getting the 1.6TD to match the 104hp/ 80ft/lbs (factory numbers) of the 22RE wont be hard. Add to that some weight loss - and who's complaining? Not looking for gobs of power here - Just keeping output roughly the same.

D24T engines came in volvo cars. ive never thought much of stock 22r's ive owned one stock 22r. hated it. every other one i had, got the full treatment. header, cam, exhaust, big weber, msd. and more recently ive been running 3VZ V6 engines in my toyota. ive got 35" tires on my runner, so a lowly 1.6 is not really an option for me. but its definently a good way to get way better mileage than a 22r. and have the same power.

As on who had a volvo 265 turbodiesel I can state that the only engine harder to find parts for would be the mythical BMW 524 TD engine. Stick to the VW's maybe an AAZ with a bit more torque than the 1.6 anything else is just too frustrating to find stuff for. Cheers Dan

all you really need is a Giles pump to wake that 1.6TD up. add in an intercooler and larger exhaust and you're well into 140hp territory, which will be plenty quicker than the 22re.
i will second that these engines have replacement parts readily available, and for not too much money. in the future if you want to go AAZ, at least you have all the mounts :wink:
the engine sounds ok, maybe idling a little high but thats alright. the noise could be a sticky injector or valve lifter. the smoke indicates to me that the timing could be slightly off. did you time the engine? if so what did you set it at?

I've seen quite a few d24s floating around yards here in old 7-series Volvos and have considered pulling one before..
What worries me is that most of the vehicles don't have body damage, which leads me to believe they are there due to drivetrain or [gasp] engine failure.
According to this
turbobricks.com thread, the d24t weighs 470LB; quite a bit more than a 1.6td?

Pump may be in the works - this one has multiple leaks, so it's high on the list. May look at a 1.9 head and go frankenmotor before going to another engine entirely...
Didn't do timing, just beat on her until she gave in and started

Wanted to ensure she would start before starting this swap process...
Got lots of room for a huge intercooler, running a 3" exhaust wont be trouble, but not going to be aiming for 140hp - 120 is my top end, I'd rather keep the HP down and keep from having to change U-Joints on the trails over and over...

Trying to convince my VW guru to come by with his timing tools & compression tester; had a looksee with mine, none of the adapters match... As long as she runs ok for now - I'll be happy, just need to get out for the may 2-4; missed it 3 years running; I am going wheeling this year

If I've got to tear it down afterwords, so be it

No idea how long it's sat - guessing at least a year - possibly two going by the amount of compost going on at the cowl...

kinda looks like every diesel i worked on, that ended up sitting for a period of time.. one was a 1.6 na that sat for 3 year. oil in the engine was a liquid oily water (or oil -20W -10), just dripping off the dip stick like water would with rain-X/rainaway. so i'm guessing piston rings stuck or grimed up, varnish in the injector and IP, tank, filter... almost need a rebuild, cleaned up, purged, new seals.
i see your car has cuise controll in her. it too bad that diaphram is in the engine bay and VW didn't move in the car till mk3s... then the CC wouldn't work.
you can run her, she'll start getting better and better as time goes by with running her

Well finally got it all pulled out, mounted on the engine stand to start initial dissasembly... and...


explains the timing being off a touch...
