Power delivery, something wrong?
« on: May 30, 2009, 05:06:56 am »
Since i've had my GTD I've thought it is quite torquey but the actual horsepower doesnt seem so impressive. The car is meant to have 80bhp standard and has new bosch injectors and a new head. The turbo has no play at all and spins completely freely.

Basically my turbo spools at about 2000rpm if I'm driving normally say up a hill, however if I do a sprinted acceleration from second the turbo(power) kicks in at about 2600rpm-2800rpm. When it does this it does seem nice and fast however shouldnt I be getting more power earlier on? It has a k14 watercooled turbo on it. And there is absolutely no visible smoke at all when at WOT or ever for that matter.

Does this sound as though the LDA isn't functioning correctly? I don't really know how to test it. My first idea is to try and turn the max fuel screw a bit until I start seeing a bit of smoke when accelerating hard.

Thanks

Well I know that if I give mine the welly, it will accelerate smoothly up to about 2500rpm, and then it takes off, and you can really hear (and feel) the turbo wind up. It does give smoke though but I wouldnt say an unacceptible amount. I just get it up to that sort of rev range when Im overtaking or coming onto a motorway though. Around town I just dont use it, and it keeps things very economical as well. Its nice to know the power is there when I want it though.

Anyway, sorry for going off on a tangent. I hope that helps.

Thanks airhead

Unlike you I have never really heard the turbo on my car. There is no whine, hiss or normal turbo noise, just boost. Which I did find a bit weird when I first got the car as my old peugeot 1.9td used to have a very loud turbo noise. I've just got used to it now as it is obviousely producing boost.
I'm much like you with my driving, in that I dont really use the turbo apart from overtaking and motorway slip roads. It does produce nice torque at 2000rpm so I guess im partially using the turbo when i'm in that rev range.

I think I'm going to turn the max fuel screw slightly and see if it makes any difference. Anyone know how to remove the tamper proof collar with out breaking it, as i would like to replace it.

I would leave it off, but im not sure if it would cause some insurance problems if I had a crash. Tbh i doubt they would even know it was a diesel pump so its probably not an issue.

Of course it wont create problems with insurance! Just take the collar off.

Actually, in my T3 I was able to turn the screw a half turn without removing the collar at all.
