So what your saying is......I should buy this, pull out the bad engine.....put the 1.6 N/A outta my 86 Golf into this and have a nice looking car instead of a junker?

Sounds good to me, now you convince my wife! :)

Well you should be able to sell all the TDI crap you won't be needing for a decent amount of money, and you'll have a new car. How can you not win?

you could even convert your NA to a TD with the VNT off the TDI and sell the TDI stuff like tyler said to pay for the conversion/beefing up.  8)

Are you saying that a turbo from a 2001 TDI Jetta will work on a N/A 1.6 from 1986......? (Excuse my Uber-Newbie-ness!)

Is there a link or a thread here or there that som1 has actually done this? (Very interesting!)

By the way, no1 bid on this car!!!!!

I sent the guy a message telling him to re-list it @ a Buy-it-Now of $2000 and I would be making a trip to Ar-Kansas w/my Jeep & a tow dolly! :)

hmmm even with the simplicity of the 1.6NA the mounts would still be a problem though... it would be real neat to run the 1.6NA with the tall gearing of the TDI box though and use the side mount with the dogbone.  then all you need to worry about is the engine mount which might not be too difficult to get working.

i think 5th gear in most cases would be off limits with stock 1.6NA power though   especially in that heavy beast.

BUT here's what i'd do.  pull the head and inspect the pistons, and measure the protrusion.  then i would send out the head to frank06 and have him go over it all nice and new.  install the head with a new mls gasket and studs, and then go from there.  oh and don't forget that the crank nose might need to be welded/machined as well with a new sprocket.  all of that should cost about $1000 or so, and the motor would run real nice! also not a bad time to install some new rings either... or even total seal rings?  8)

edit: ouch look at that... $2900 and still no takers???  hmmm offer the guy $2500 or so and get to work!  its automatic so i can't see HOW the wife would pass this up!!

ive got a VNT on my car. and my motor is from like a 76 rabbit, and its a 1.5. they will take boost just fine. throw the VNT on your motor and find a turbo fuel pump and your in 'em.

I'm looking at a similar vehicle here... MK4 with blown engine for next to nothing.. and I just happen to have a spare AAZ I'm rebuilding at the moment...

Having said that, I was under the impression (for some reason) that the MK4 platform was *not* backward compatible with MK1-3 in terms of tranny/engine bolting together and the tranny/engine mounts ?

You are correct. The mk4s have a ridiculous engine mount system. You need full custom mounts.

that being said though, you can use a 5 speed tranny from a mk4 so you don't have to worry about the dogbone & tranny mount.  i'm also guessing that the mk1 engine mount may be modifiable to work with the mk4 style mount...  the bonus is that you could pretty much bolt on a TDI vnt turbo without having to clock it or anything!  8)
