Turbo on my 1.6 NA for now, a few questions.
« on: February 01, 2009, 07:20:42 am »
Hi-

I have a few questions.  I have a TD in the works for a build but probably wont get to it it till next fall.  Im going to put my turbo set-up on my NA running low boost for a little more power and MPG.  I have a couple questions since when my TD came it wasn't completley assembled and can't seem to find the info in my vw bible..i mean bentley.

Ok so i have a picture i stole from the site and marked what i have questions about so i dont have to explain as much.

Where the red marks are.  The crank case ventilation goes to the air intake.  And also on my intake manifold on right (pass.) side there is that black chumy what exactly is it and do and does it also go to the intake piping?

I want to put the TD stock oil cooler from under the oil filter flange on as well,  Can i just tap into the coolant lines?  or do i need to use the the TD water pump.  i think i can just plum it in can i not?

Usually your boost tubing runs from the boost enrichment on a td?  can i plum mine in still with just the na pump so i can run my boost gauge?
Last one for now, My Na pump is like new runs like a top, is it that much different from the td pump?  Possible to take off the top of it and install the boost enrichment onto my NA pump?

These are my questions, I have a few i know, Thanks in advance for any help as im setting into this today.

I have my egt tapped in the exhaust manifold ready to go and a boost. Now to hunt a tach down

The "black chummy" is the factory blow off valve.  It's purpose was to open and release "excess" pressure from the intake in the event that the wastegate failed on the turbo.  Factory boost was set to about 9 PSI, the blow off valve is supposed to open at 12 PSI.

If you're planning on keeping the boost at or below stock levels then yep, just connect it to the intake like in the photo above. It will be closed all the time and won't ever actually do anything.  Basically the only time you need to mess with it is if you're planning on turning your boost up over stock, then it needs to be eliminated/disabled.

where could one get the oil separator? I still need one for my build. Can you substitute anything else? What are the internals like on the inside of this hockey puck?

When I was cleaning all my parts for my T/D rebuild I wondered how that thing worked too.  Looking into the hole at the bottom of it where it goes into the valve cover it looks to be nothing more than a baffle type thing to me to not let as much oil pass through it and doesn't look like there is anything to wear out on it other than that damn little grommet in the valve cover that costs $7 if you need one and I did

So im getting closer ot the end of getting my turbo set-up.  I am just curious do people find the stock oil cooler to help alot?  I have to kind plum my lines in a bit differently.  It will still be going with the flow.  Just curious how much does it lower oil temps?  Anyone know?

Thanks--Kane

from what I hear what it does best is help the oil get up to operating temp faster, which is good for all your engine bits.

I'm not entirely sure about the pump thing. You may be able to contact Giles about a trade; your NA pump for a turbo pump?

ps. I hate this thread so much because it reminds me of my piece of ass head that caused me SO much grief. :P  but then the second pictures comes with a *ssssssiiiiiiigggggghhhhhh* of relief!

gotcha, Well The picture has helped out alot so thank you.  Your build was nice mine.  Got some pointers off of it.  I have the turbo set-up on my car.  Runs good have to get my boost and egt gauge set-up then i will start adjusting if the fuel needs to go up or boost down vice versa.  I still have to pick up a VDO tach for the car too.  I am wondering should i get the 6000 rpm or the 4000 im guessing 6 since these redline at like 5 right?

It's runing awesome, sounds alot better too.  I just have the stock down pipe no exhaust until i get my 3" turbo back made up.  But it sounds quiter then the stock NA exhaust.  You can really hear the turbo whistle.

You guys have all been a huge help thank you. Ill have pics and video later.
