1.6 to ? transmission
« on: November 12, 2008, 11:42:35 pm »
Here's the grand plan.  I'm looking to put a 1.6L N/A or TD into my "new" 1967 Jeep.  There are kits out there to bolt it to Suzuki or Toyota transmissions, however they're just not what I'm looking for.

I've seen the VW made Volvo D24 bolted directly to a Ford T-18 with the stock Volvo bell-housing.  Since the D24 is VW and is basically a longer 1.6L if I wanted to run a ford transmission could I use the Volvo bell-housing on the 1.6L ?

If the bell-housing will bolt to the 1.6L what starter and clutch would I use on it?  The ford, volvo, or VW?  This could probably be answered by anyone who's tried to use the 1.6 in a rear wheel drive application.

The Volvo D24 engines do not use the VW I4 bolt pattern.

Volkswagen engines came with essentially three engine bolt patterns prior to the introduction of the VR6. You could get flat four (Aircooled, waterboxer), inline four (8v/16v gas and diesel), and "everything else" which covered the five and six cylinder engines used by VW and Audi.

The D20 and D24 diesels produced by VW for Audi and Volvo fall under the lattermost bolt pattern.
