I am going to be changing mine soon, I have 85k on it and will be headed to Chicago for labor day and am planning on replacing the belt, waterpump and tensioner before the trip.
My questions is this, has anyone done theirs, how long did it take, a whole weekend or just a day, I am a very accomplished mechanic, but have never worked on this new of a diesel, I did plenty to my 80' 1.5l na and used to be a John Deere combine mechanic.
I have the red Bentley manual, and am going to read it several times before starting.
Any suggestions or opinions would be appreciated, Thanks.
Kris
Go to tdiclub. There are good step-by-step walk-throughs for the 06 tdi. Dieselgeek has complete timing belt change kits including waterpump and all the tools needed for the best price you will find anywhere.
Here's the link for the BRM kit:

You need the crank locking tool and the cam gear locking pin. It's not too hard, you need a floor jack to support the engine once the mount is out, you need a couple liters ofcoolant and most of the parts listed on the dieselgeek site. Although replacing the nuts and crank bolts is overkill IMO.
Frankly, If it were mine I'd wait til closer to 100k as the wider belts on the PD's aren't near as prone to random low mile breakage or idler bearing faulre as the ALH.
Also if you guys need newer TDI parts I can help with that too, I'm sure I can do better than those prices without sacrificing quality.
I'd even consider buying an extra set of tools to rent out if people wanted that kind of service.
