94 Golf AZZ Fuel Issues

Hello Folks,

This a.m. I'm going to look at a 94 Golf diesel with 250,000km. Car has sat for a year due to a "no start" condition.

The only way it will currently run, (i was told) is by connecting injector pump directly to a container of diesel (in the engine compartment) & letting ip suck fuel from this container. When you do this the engine revs like crazy? There is no control with the throttle?

Any suggestions? I'm hoping it isn't an injector pump issue. If so, what would the cost and availability be of a ip?

Finally, is there anything else I need to be looking at prior to buying this Golf?

The owner want $600 and this rig would make a good replacement for my worn 92 Jetta 1.6 td. Worse case scenario, I figure I can install my 1.6td engine into this Golf.

Sorry for the longwinded thingamadealie - I'm new to the A3, AZZ thing.

Just an update and a few questions. Bought the 94 Golf with AAZ - but no start.

Turns over, tries to start, then I get a intake backfire and continue to try to start.

I'm unsure if the glow plugs work - but the light comes on & then turns off after about 10 seconds. (it is 11 degrees C here). But I'm cranking it long enough to assume that the engine compression will do its job to ignite the fuel.

I also noticed the timing belt can be turned about 80 degrees - so it is a bit loose.

To ensure there was fuel going to the IP, I temporarily installed a Facet electric pump.

Still the same, tries to start and then backfires once or twice and tries to start again.

Also, the diesel fuel doesn't smell too "dieselly" - but it doesn't smell like gas.

So, what I am thinking is:

1.That the timing is too advanced - perhaps timing belt has skipped a tooth?
2. Bad Fuel?
3. Bent valves via timing belt issue or crank sprocket?
4. Bad IP?

Any thoughts?

Put on a new timing belt and tensioner, new fuel and air filters and run off of a new bucket of diesel fuel, bypassing the tank.

A fresh battery might not be enough, you might want to consider tow-starting it, that always did the trick for us.
