Injector Pump Dissassembly
« on: April 10, 2008, 02:07:12 pm »
I am currently trying to take apart my injector pump but I have run into some snags.

I am trying to take apart my governor right now but I don't know what to do with this shaft:

On weeman's pump dissassembly thread, he posts this picture:

On his dissassembly it is a nut, but on mine, it is just a round shaft!!!?? How the hell do I take this thing out then? I tried yanking on an allen wrench but that bolt doesn't budge... Anybody have advice?

Impact driver on the pump head and that collar on the gov shaft needs to be loosened just like a nut before you will be able to spin the shaft out.

Thanks, I got the pump head loosened with an impact driver like you said.

But I'm still having trouble removing that 'collar' because it has a round head instead of a hex head.

I tried inserting needle nose pliers into the two indentations and turning it but no luck. Is there a special tool for this?

Are you guys aware it has left-hand threads ?

One other suggestion... you'll notice it has a blob of yellow paint in the second picture.. so you'll want to measure its protrusion so that you can put it back pretty much the way you found it.  It's not a super critical adjustment, but is factory-calibrated.

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I found out it was left hand threaded after I deformed the metal collar trying to get it off. I grinded a crescent wrench that could fit in the two slots and finally got it out by going the other way.

And nope, I didn't mark the protrusion.

Oh well, I have the whole injection pump taken apart now, planning to reseal it now. Thanks.

Darn it, eh... hindsight is always 20:20.

You do have a picture of how much the screw was recessed into the nut, so should be fine during reassembly.

Yea, I suppose it should be ok.

BTW:
I took this pump apart because somebody had hinted the vanes in the feed pump might be rusted stuck. If anybody wants to read the continuation of my saga to get this car running, the thread is here:

On all the pumps I've seen, the end of the allen head governor shaft is flush with the edge of the lock-collar.  Just FYI.  But yours could be the exception     I just thought I would add that in case your photos don't show the position clear enough.
