i have one question (it's probably stupid, but i can't think of an answer)...
does bigger straight exhaust (for instance 2.5" od 3" without mufflers) affect mileage?
and by how much?

From what I have seen and been given to understand, anything that removes restrictions from the exhaust system post-turbo will improve economy/power. Since a diesel doesn't need a certain level of backpressure to function, like a gasser would, anything you can do to get that exhaust out of there and gone is a good thing.

Larger downpipes and exhausts can help the turbo spool faster, lower EGTs, and improve fuel economy, though beyond 2.5" it seems you begin to run into diminishing returns, less benefit for the additional area than you saw in the initial step up from stock diameter.

3" watch for the rattle snake... I think cutting EGT is more what your intersted in, I think the economy will gain huge also...
Your sure to better your vw with a larger non restrictive exhaust

Im in the market for one as well and a lot of members on this board have been telling me to up the size of the tubing to 2.5 for best results
good luck
