Got it finally... Thanks all... I just needed to be more patient and more persuasive with it... Nothing like laying under the car with the bellhousing in your hands, using one foot to hold up the tail end, using my shoulder to nudge the engine around, and holding the bottom mounting bolt in my mouth... Got it though...
Yup, it can be a pain sometimes. Especially if your are rushing it or don't know exactly how to twist it, blah blah...
Next time will be much easier.
Glad it all worked out.
So I wrecked the transmission on my 89 jetta 1.6 5sp... Pulled it with great difficulty, installed a new clutch (even though the old one wasn't half bad)... And am now in the process of installing the new (junkyard) tranny... What a PITA... Are there any tricks for wrestling this thing into place... I've got it close, but the LH drive flange is all hung up on the engine block, I've got the engine pulled all the way over to the right, I cant push the tranny further back because it runs into the steering crap, and if I lower the LH side of the engine any more it makes the back of the tranny get tangled up the mounts... I've wrestled with this thing for an hour and a half now, all the while with it only inches from where it needs to be, but never quite making it... Any tips for making this easier??
when you said tranny wrestling,i was thinking something else, sorry
tranny doesnt mean transmission in places like LA and san fran
i use a floorjack and a tiedown strap to hoist it in there

but you clicked on it anyway

Ugh, been in that situation about 1/2 dozen times already. I'm only 150 lbs myself so it's quite a job. I think once I even had it resting on my hips while I kind of arched my back to get it up there using mostly my legs for strength. Sometimes it pays to be a speedskater.

I saw a old thread of you using your floor jack, cept it was the car scissor jack. Guess you needed just a bit more out of it cause you had it balanced on top of a piston while it was hold'n up the car  now thats hillfolk
