Worn Rings
« on: March 04, 2008, 08:34:11 pm »
Now that I concluded that the blowby was caused by worn rings, I'm trying to figure out why the rings wore so fast.  I thought that maybe the rings were made of inferior materials, but could there be another reason?  One thing I heard that if there is a little too much clearance between the piston and the bore, the piston will wobble slightly and put a razor edge on the rings, and they will wear out faster.  Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Aren't running a K&N are you? All air hoses tight on the intake with no holes? I can say from experience that dust wears rings in a big hurry.

No K&N, no holes or loose clamps.  There was no wear ridge in the bore either, just the rings.

What brand rings did you buy? Generally speaking, the cheaper Cofap rings dont last as long. It is also possible that the rings did not seat properly and you're getting blowby from that.

I got these online from Top Line Automotive.  The end gap was much larger after 3000 miles than when I installed them.  Oil consumption got steadily worse with use.

And you did have the engine properly honed before installing the rings? I guess I can see where if there was too much piston play, it might be possible for them to wear the cylinder down, but other than my rings, I've never heard of even crappy rings wearing out in 3k miles.

Man I hope this is just a fluke.

My pistons and rings are Top Line as well.

I probably didn't do the best job honing last time. I just used the 3 prong flat hone.  This time I'll use a ball hone and a brush.  Then I'll install the gapless 2nd ring set from Total Seal.

I seriously considered the Total seal option but I kept thinking I was in a hurry and need to use what I had. Now here we are 4 months later and I'm still not done.

Mine was bored then ball honed and I just got it fired up so I'll do a good break in on the rings and hopefully not have the same problem you have.

I'll know pretty fast, I drive 125 miles a day min so almost 2700 miles in a month.
