GTD Rev counter not working
« on: August 13, 2007, 09:39:35 am »
Hi guys, i have traced a broken wire down to the red/ black on my aternater. Does anyone know which terminal it should be soldered onto? There seems to be a choice of 3 on the alternater, if its possible to make out on the pics.....

Hope someone knows as i really want this working. :?

Thanks alot, Joel

Yup, the tach is driven off the W terminal which is usually a red/black stripe wire with a spade lug (rectangular push-on).. the other two (B+ and D+) are circular bolt-on connectors.

Ok, the black/red wire plugs into the W terminal, but behind that is a lilac wire and that is soldered onto the alternater somewhere. It looks long enough to reach one of the 3 terminals with 3 red wires fixed to them, 1 on each. See pics :?

Ah... the broken wire is *inside* the alternator....

I believe it matters not which of the three terminals internally you go to (although you may be able to detect remnants of the broken wire)... basically it's just picking up one of the 3 phases from the diode bridge.. probably doesn't matter which phase.

I have an alternator schematic with the W terminal labeled... will edit this post if I can find it.

Someone I know was timing a gasser and thought you twisted the crankshaft pulley to adjust where the mark was (rather than the distributor) while the engine was running...after all, it looks like it's standing still when being illuminated by a timing light.

what kind of output is 'W' putting out, I was getting a constant 9VAC. Am I looking for a Hz output?

Yup, it's a sine wave at about 10x the frequency an ignition system would be putting out... hence the difference in the tach/cruise/oil warning systems between diesels and gassers.
