1.9 head gasket on 1.6 hydro?
« on: March 08, 2006, 07:51:38 am »
Planned on using the more robust 1.9 hg  on my late edition 1992 1.6 but the hole patterns are different. Would sure hate to block an oil or water passage. Does the 1.9 need to be altered or is it a direct bolt on?

I have a 1.9 head with 1.9 head gasket on a 1.6 hydro motor right now.  It runs.  Has misfire and smoke problems when it is cold.  The holes do line up though with the 1.9 gasket.  Only problem you will have is that the cylinder holes in the 1.9 gasket are slightly bigger so you lose a bit of compression.

I use the 1.9 HG's on all th hydraulic lifter 1.6's that come to my shop. Seeing how yours is a 92 it should be hydraulic unless someone swapped it out for a solid lifter at some point. No modifications for the hydraulics. Do you have the headgasket flipped the right way?

My '88 Jetta has an MF hydraulic lifter 1.6TD engine and I am running a 1.9TD (AAZ) head gasket on it. Nothing special was done to make it work and I've had no problems with it at all. I would definitely recommend it.

Hahaha brett that was a bad day for you, oh wait more liek a bad week, taht was some "rebuilt engine" hahaha.  AS for the AAZ HG on a 1.6 HYD I have done around 20-30 of them, works awesome. IF its not lining up and it is a hydraulic blockt he headgasket is upside down.

I agree.
The 1.9 (AAZ) HG fits real nice under my 1.6 (MF) hydraulic head. The 1.6TD tends to blow out the stock gasket due to such a small cylinder and  high compression level (plus boost). The Metal HG is the way to go, and if you can afford it, rock out some Raceware aircraft grade head studs. I couldn't when I did my HG, but can appreciate the benefits.

Can someone tell me what is the great benefit of putting a 1.9 HG on a 1.6 ?

I drive my car now for 6,5 years with different 1.6 engines and never had gasket problems.

The 1.9L is a layered steel shim gasket, which seals much better, especially in engines running a lot of boost. The stock 1.6L is just a standard style gasket. It will work fine in most applications, but for just a little bit more, you might as well use the better gasket if you ever need one.

At my parts store I  put the 1.9 over a 1.6 and there was a difference in hole patterns. Does anyone have the part # for the aaz 1.9 2 notch HG?
