I may have asked about this before but - do you have a steering column that isn't all jacked up? Mine has that wicked rattle they get when the lower bearing wipes out..

Myke,

You may want to just try checking that lower bearing as the problem is that they come loose from there mounting area in the column. Pushing it up, back in take the wiggle out of things as well as well. Its a common problem on the mk1. Many a fix has been done with a single zip tie that works flawlessly or if you want to go to town, push it back up in and add a hose clamp to keep it there.

Had the problem in my 81...never had a prob after.

There is a rebuild kit out there too...think it was 20.00 or so for it.

all the glass is coming out of this baby, front triangles are gone but hatch, all 4 squares, and rear triangles are still available as well as the chrome trim that goes around the windows.

That's a 1.6 solid lifter gas engine, right?

I'd be interested in the head, cam gear, and intermediate shaft w/ gear...

That camshaft would be an upgrade for 81+ solid lifter gas engines. Almost the same as a G grind.
I repair, maintain and modify VW's and BMW's.
Good work done at affordable rates. Welding and fabricating, too.
Performance Diesel Injection's Super Pump: gotta have one!
