Okay, I know stupid question. The bentley says something like "the side with the indentation goes up", but both sides have indentations. One indentation is a flat indentation, the other side is a cone shaped indentation. My instinct says the flat shaped indentation points towards the injector with the cone shaped one pointing down?

There is a flange on the outer lip of the heat shield which would also be pointing down in this configuration.

Sorry guys, I should know this but it's been a few years and want to be sure.

Cone points up, wide flat part with the very fine concentric lines go down.

Like this bud:

The smaller diameter part of the cone seats against the injector face, while the larger diameter seats against the cylinder head. Use a screw driver to guide it into the cylinder head hole without it falling or flipping.

ignorant question- can I re-use old heat shields?? if no, why not?

No, because they get slightly deformed, and can also end up getting stuck in the head. They don't cost much, just order some spares for the next time. Even from the dealer, I think they were only $2 something a piece.
