What Master Cylinder - 81 Rabbit D
« on: December 23, 2007, 03:05:59 pm »
I think that my Master is toast.
I recently had to redo some brake lines, and after doing them, and bleeding them several times farthest to closest, it woudl appear that once i push the brake pedal down, it grabs on all 4's nicely. But, if I hold it, it will sink slowly, then stop.
I'm not losing any fluid, so it's not a leak.

I've bled the snot out of this thing.
Now, it's the original MC, and i've had it drained and refilled at least 3 times in the last few months. I've been told this can be bad. As well, when bleeding, my helper was pushing the brake all the way to the floor while pumping, always while fluid was in the res though.

So, skip ahead a month, my brake pedal suddenly feels very firm, and the brakes are barely engaging. They are going on, and if I hold the pedal, it will slowly sink and grab hard, but if i pump the pedal a few times, it hardens up and the brakes hardly work again.

At this point, I'm thinking it's the MC.
The calipers were taken from a working car.
The rear brakes were all completely rebuilt a few weeks ago.
All new lines MC to rear and front calipers.
The only thing original on the brakes is the MC/Res and Booster.

Now, I have checked some local retailers, and they only list Rabbit gas MC's. And they don't list the Diesel MC.
But in ETKA, I can't find any distinction.
As well, a lot of online retailers show the same parts for both the Rabbit diesel 81 and the gas 81.

Anyone know what is the correct part to use?

If you go to rockauto.com, there are several listed, all the same as teh gas models.

Thanks!

as far as i know there are 2 styles 1 for german models witch has 6 ports off the master 2 of them are for brake light switch! will work! just block off what you don't need! the other looks the same has 6 ports but only 4 are taped for your lines because the brake switch is on your brake pedal and for the (westmoreland rabbit squared headlights) but i think some '81 had the brakelight switch on the master as well and keep in mind the flange size that bolts to the powerbooster that makes a difference also! 2 sizes there too!
hope that helps?
thanks Duane

So the standard rabbit 1.7L gas motor model should be the same as the 1.6D model MC?
