Howto time the 1.6TD engine

Hi, i bought the tools now, but i need to how to time it correctly, i've placed the camshaft holder, but how do i time the diesel pump? i got this measure instrument that i'm placing back of the pump, but i don't know what to read and where to lock it.

The proceedure is covered really well in the Bentley service manual (which you bought before you even considered buying the timing tools, right ??!!!) but in case you've missplaced it (;-)) here's a link:

There is an error in the second step.. it should say "reset the gauge to 0" rather than "reset the gauge to 1mm".

Most important thing... once you are done, rotate the engine by hand a couple of revs to ensure nothing is hitting anything... expensive damage can result if it's really out of whack.

thank you, but this confused me  :roll:

It says pump pin in place, ok no problem... but then it says rotate the engine backwards... hehe?

The pins are used to set the coarse timing... ie confirm the sprockets and the belt are in alignment.

You then:

1) remove *all* the pins etc
2) rotate the engine backwards  (CCW) until the gauge stops moving
3) zero the gauge
4) rotate the engine forwards (CW) to *exactly* TDC on the crank
5) read the timing value on the dial gauge
6) if needed, rotate the injection pump to get the correct reading... rotating the pump towards the engine *increases* the timing number.

A bit clearer I hope ?   It isn't complicated once you've done it once, but it definately is confusing in the beginning.  My new web site is almost up, and job one will be a revised pictorial on this particularly common procedure.
