Rebuilding a Garrett turbo

It came off of an '82 Quantum 1.6L diesel engine.  Seems okay, but I just want to check out the internals before putting it on my rebuilt engine.  Also thought it wouldn't hurt anything to polish the intake a bit.  There is a thin gasket between the turbine housing and the bearing housing.  Will high-heat silicone work in place of it, or should I get the gasket?
