Just one more question/comment from me today:
As mentioned in an earlier thread, I just had the head and injection pump on my 92 1.6TD rebuilt by VW. Unfortunately, I noticed one of the fuel lines coming from the pump is wet with fuel. It's not dripping wet, but the nut connecting the line to the pump is darker with a film of diesel. Should I bother to nag VW about this after the pump was just rebuilt?

my rebuilt pump did the same thing. i just gave the nut another 1/8th turn and it stopped.
That's hilarious! I feel like such a fool. I'm a quality control manager for a major hardwood veneer manufacturer and most of my work is fairly theoretical in nature, rather than practical. Clearly I just gave myself away. Tightening the nut is the logical solution, but of course I see all the other complexities that may be at play here. Sometimes, the simplest solution is indeed the answer. Even if it's not, it's obviously worth eliminating it as a cause before digging deeper. I should start thinking more like a mechanic, and not a scientist, as I am.

Loose nut is the cause of most automotive problems.
Especially in the driver's seat
if you tignten it a little and it doesnt stop leaking you probably need to use some emry cloth on the line ends and the pump fittings. be sure to clean everything real good afterwards though.
