Auxillary Fuel Tanks for mk1 cars

Years ago, you used to see quite a few rabbits (mostly diesels) with extra fuel tanks. It was even a dealer option in the 79/80 Westmorelands I believe.
The tanks were located along the rear right side of the car. There was another extra fuel tank (3rd party...not OEM) that was available that installed in the spare wheel well. You had to use a switch so that the gauge knew which fuel sender to read for volume.

I even saw one conversion where the fellow had a fill neck on both sides of the car, one for the stock gas tank and one for the aux gas tank. Wild stuff. Anyone see any of these lately?

Does anyone have any info on these tanks...Volume?  Necessary to 'switch' between tanks or does it act like an extension to the main tank?  I'd like to see installation photos if anyone has any.

Yeah I have seen a few of the round tire well ones go by on Ebay, but they bring more $ than I want to pay for a 20 year old steel fuel tank.

There is this http://www.vegpower.com/order/prodpage.cfm?cat_selected=114&product_selected=75&startrow=1 .  Which at $399 isnt bad if you are planning a heated tank.

I have also seen people cut down and reweld a steel barrel to fit, but they must have found a smaller than normal barrel to start with.

I think what I will do if I ever get around to a WVO conversion is remove the spare tire well, weld in a flat floor and mount a flat rectangular tank under the car where the spare tire well used to be.
