Hopefully you have an EGT sensor and are watching your temps with that instead of the "too late" water temp gauge. A dropped pre-cup is not a pretty thing as several here can tell you.
The time from cold start to the time that your engine reaches normal operating temperature is when ALL the wear and tear happens on your engine. Even if you only drive in the summer it is still a good idea to have a thermostatic control. It's not like there is a downside.
