1Y head on a 1.6 TD

Hey all. Tried searching for the answer but to no avail.

Basically a friend of mine is scrapping a 1.9 1Y MK3 Jetta and he said I can have the head. Im looking to use if for a 1.9/1.6 frankenstein build but dont know if the 1y head is suitable or not.

Anyone know if they are the same as the AAZ head?

Don't do it.

I have 1Y on the 1.6 - it'll be returning to 1.6 head soon.

The losses seem to outweigh the gains.

1Y head is the same i think it has the valve stem 1mm smaller but no problem there.

ive heard of lots of people using 1.9 heads on a GOOD RUNNING 1.6L engine just fine, no problems at all.

you have to start out with an engine that runs good tho. i imagine there is something awry with REGs motor, because he can not get it to run right at all..

Smokey Eddy had a Hybrid up in cold-ass canada for quite some time.. ran fine. he drove it long enough to throw a rod..

and it really doesnt look as if northern England is located any more northern than about central canada, so it may get decently cold..

With regards to your starting issues in cold weather Reg... My Jettas and my old Vento all give a bit of juddering and missing before starting man. Seemed pretty normal to me... just give it a bit of a rev and it sorts itself out.

The Golf this is going into is only gonna be driven in the summer and will be dry stored in the winter man. So cold starts really shouldnt be an issue. I have my Jetta beater for the harsh winter ahead lol.

Smoky Eddy is out here around Abbotsford just FYI - it isn't exactly cold around here in the winter.  Many years we won't get below freezing for more than a few days.  Block heaters are pretty much unheard of.  Just think Seattle!

 so, its basically the same climate as it is here in oregon..

and theres lots of hybrid owners here.. well, not lots, the theres atleast a half dozen of them..

Nothing wrong with the motor - ran fine as a GTD.

It goes and runs fine (blooming fantastic in fact), slight increase in clatter and a unacceptable (to me) level of smoke at start-up

It's not cold here, was 30 deg C the other day. Still chugs a bit of white smoke.

Have you really - because the only person on here that everyone seemed to think had a perfect running engine, actually quoted his actual experience and he has exactly the same problems as my hybrid.

Don't get me wrong, it runs great within two seconds of driving - but you can't fire it up cold an let it sit there idling as it'll misfire and chug and belch white fog. You have to fire it up and drive to save embarrassment.

And it starts instantly on the button first time every time.

But if there is someone out there with a hybrid that runs clean from cold - I'd love to know the setup....because I'm running out of options.

i know i have seen some people on vwvortex say to experiment with different headgasket thickness, how ever i don't like that solution because then you're messing with the injection process and valve clearance.  also i don't know where those people even lived. 

heres the page where dave says he had his timing at 1.15, but he had also ported around the valve seat which would have lowered compression even more
