VNT Turbo
« on: October 27, 2010, 10:43:21 pm »
I've been reading about adding a VNT to a 1.6, getting rid of the T3 in my case.  I have a MK3 Golf and my major concern is the rear motor mount.  If I use the singe unit (turbo & manifold as one) I assume something must be done to the rear, passenger motor mount.  Is there currently a kit one can get that changes it or is it strictly a weld only type of thing?

I've also seen VNT that are bolt on like the KKK, k14 or something like it - and I belive use a K exhaust manifold.  Will these bolt on without major mods to the rear mount?

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

Yeah the AFN vnt is what you're talking about, some people have talked about trying it but I don't know if anyone ever did.

Someone in the vendor section is selling mounts for using a regular vnt.......
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

euro VNT, it bolts on with a flange, but its flange is clocked differently than the k03 manifold..

it still takes a specific manifold to mount right IIRC..

On a us spec VNT 17 is the cold side outlet to the bottom of the car or some other rotation position?  can this be changed?  Up to the top of the engine would be best for me.  I see buying a new one (one I could trust) is like over a grand.  has anyone tried a non-german one?  I'd like to go this route, but I think finding a used one is almost impossible, where I live anyway.

What about a vnt 15 for a 1.6 td - or are they too small.  I'm not looking for high Hp, just a it less lag as I don't abuse my car, it usually driven between 3000-3500rpm.

For not high HP I bet the 15 would be fine. Dr. Diesel had one for cheap a couple months ago too in the for sale section.

The compressor scroll can be rotated easily.  Just loosen the bolts that clamp it to the backing plate and spin it.

VNT-15 is really well sized to a 1.6TD, IMO.  I'm currently running one on my VNT vanagon.

my 17 works very well too. why didnt VW make them factory?! oh yea, VNTs werent out for another 20 years!
