max cruising rpm?
« on: October 11, 2010, 05:03:19 pm »
I just drove up to smithers from vancouver and  back this weekend and was wondering if i was too hard on my engine... I was cruising at approx 140km/h and the engine was reving at around 4k rpm for parts of the trip. I kept the tryed to keep the egt's under 1200 but i am still wondering how these engines handle higher rpms for long periods of time.

X2 I personally also wonder that. My engine always seems to run just fine after long drives, but then again I dont usally drive 140 on the highway :)

I actually just drove to smithers the other weekend also, but I came from terrace.

I keep my transporter with a1.9 na pinned at the factory tach top of the green section which is 3600 rpms all day. That way i'm still in the power band so there's enough to pass.

well these are 1.6 motors so they love to spin.. and not only that there more robust then their gasser brethren, and even more robust still then there equivalent sized brethren (honda). I see no problem other than reduced mileage. :)

last spring Ive gone from prince george to terrace in 4.5hrs one time 683km or somewhere in there, that was at 160km / hr the whole way prety much at 20psi no know egt gauge never had one at the time, and  no tach, was before i swapped in my stock cluster with a tach but she was screamin. now im scarred to go that fast again seeing how high it would have been reving. but i never really had any problems other then my heater motor deciding to catch fire and melt the controls  because the car was over charging, cooked the battery but all in all it was a good trip.

Volkswagen were built for abuse, especially the diesels. That's why so many have made it to 500k kms even with a dozen over-due oil changes. I'd like to see engines today last that long. Today its all about the now, repalce it when it breaks, and don't worry about three years from now when your engine needs a new crank at 65,000kms ;D

That's the beauty of these engines, however i wouldn't do it all the time if you want it to last forever-which they will if not abused too much. What's the record? last time i heard was some guy in Alberta with over 750,000 kms. I'm sure there's higher.
