Purge valve on 1981 rabbit diesel
« on: February 20, 2010, 02:39:04 am »
Inside the engine bay where is the 'purge valve' on a 1981 rabbit 1.6L diesel; and what does it look like if you can?
Thanks

I have this rubber hose that comes from the diesel tank up into the engine bay of my 1.6L diesel ... by following the track of the diesel fuel feed and return metal lines.

In side the engine bay, from where the metal lines end and engine hoses are connected, this rubber hose is about 3 ft. long.  It 'appears' to be a vent hose of some sort ... but am not sure ... thus my asking.  I've looked all over for a 'nipple' ... unsuccessfully.

I asked on another forum and a responder said it goes to this so called 'purge valve'; but when queried for more information, location ... look like ... etc ... does not respond.

I'm of the impression, and I most certainly am not a mechanic, that there is no 'purge valve' on the 1.6 diesel of the 1981 vintage.

So .... if it is a vent hose, why in the world did VW run it all the way forward from the tank at the rear, clear up to the engine bay ... just to vent fumes, etc.?
Why not let it dangle down near the tank?  Just wondering??????

WTF? purge valve? for what? no purge valves that i know of.

its the tank vent hose i think, and all mine just end in a hole in the top of the passenger side frame rail. it just sticks in that hole, nowhere else for it to go, and nothing for it to do. theres a hole there i bet anything. hope thats the tube you are talking about.

THANKS!  Yes, see the hole ... and 'seem' to  recall it there before.  Has been some time since 'apparently' pulling it out .... and then, becoming confused since not seeing anything to connect it to.

Have never seen this arrangement ... with such a long 'run' that is .... just for venting.
Oh well..... at least it's not to a 'purge valve' ??????? ... like the other fellow said.   ???

I think it goes all the way to the engine bay for some sort of safety or emissions regulations.

Interesting. All the ones I've seen seem to just disappear into the hole in the front frame member.

on the passenger fender? Look up under the well, above the passenger wheel.. you may see a canister.. and then there is a tube that goes back out and in to the bay.. but mine is cut off.. and not sure where its meant to go ;)

i've had them on both german and westmoreland cars; the bracket makes a nice spot for water to get in and rust into the cab   :(
