How long to remove the head on an 01 jetta TDI?
« on: October 01, 2009, 07:48:14 pm »
Anyone have an idea as to how many hours to take off the head for a 01 jetta? trying to decide if I should remove the motor tranny combo and rebuild or just fix the head. timing went off from loose cam bolt I was told. it would be a good time to build a good motor, but also might just be worth getting on the road.

Personally i could get it off in less than 1 1/2 hrs. [ faster if i use the impact gun for the head bolts ! ;D].
Really not too hard

What is the tool size for the head bolts? I think new studs are in order at this time as I plan on some mods at least until my check book screams.

You may have to pull the valve cover before anything , they head bolts might be a new configuration- kinda like squared off torx.

They take 12mm tripple square/12 point. Same as a IDI.

so you bent valves? or will it still run?

obviously if the timing has slipped you wont need to take the head off unless its bent sumit

are you talking about an ALH? head off is mega easy

You're right, for some reason i thought we were talking about a newer model.

Hmmm everyone says its so easy to take the head off an ALH...
I was thinking about changing the HG on my parents TDI and maybe cleaning the head up a bit. checking how the valves seat.
Are there any special tools or tricks to remember?

About the only special tool you need is the 12mm 12 point socket. Why do you want to do the HG on the car? Is there a problem? If not, why do it?
