Cool, welcome to the board!!!
Also, encouraging to know that you did a "basic" rebuild and made it another 100k miles. I'm doing basically the same thing to my wife's car (which we have not driven yet) only I'm slapping a turbo on to the N/A engine. I have not updated the thread in a while but it's still alive.
I'd post that in the "IDI" section of the site. I think that's where my build thread is anyway.
Would love to see pictures!
Brendan
After having a dream about not being able to get on the Long Island Expessway safely in my Rabbit, I knew I had to go turbo.
That was Harry Chapin's ghost telling you something...
Welcome from a fellow Long Islander. One of the best VW diesel sites, the other good one is run by a VW diesel guru in Ohio.
Ya might want to have Giles near Toronto modify your IP. I will be having my NA IP done soon. The TD guys can vouch for him. I have read it does wonders with an NA diesel, I could imagine what it will do with the TD engine.
As you have seen by lurking here, the diesel knowledge here is top notch.
I'm not too mechanically inclined, love to watch ya rebuild the engine.
Again, welcome aboard.
Stay safe,stay well. Jimmy
Well, if it makes you feel any better, that crank can probably be repaired. But I'm pretty sure the NA and TD cranks are the same.
I don't trust those integral thrust bearings. I re-used my thrust washers on the Wife's car. The crank endplay was dead-on to the Bentley manual specifications, so I figure it's good to go.

td cranks or treated some how, but who cares, they are interchangable
Hi Jimmy,
That's a good find. Maybe you should pick it up. I thought you were looking for a TD engine.
I have a tow bar that bolts to the tow hooks on the front of a Jetta.
Right about now I have too many cars/projects and no where to keep this stuff. I work on my car at my firends house. I still need to get the ECOdiesel home from Middle Island. I found a crank and am debating on rebuilding the TD engine. I would rather yank the engine from the ECO and rebuild that because it has the low maintenance hydro lifters. The AVX tranny could be swapped out for a more highway friendly unit too.
My friend thinks I am nuts.
Whatever I start, needs to be completed before winter.
Just put a forsale sign on the 1986 NA Jetta.
I may be going to the Borders tonight around 8:30PM, weather permitting.
Jerry
Sticking with the NA for now, waiting to get the IP 'Gilesfied', and a few other things..
Power is nice, but I'm a mileage guy now. Love my 89, but needs a little more boost than the 52HP it has now.
If I do get addicted,I will no doubt look for a TD. I have to put a clutch in it now, then wait for the good 'Dr.'
Every Wed Borders? Have to work tomorrow night, I'll try next week, and bring the 09.
Stay safe, stay well. Jimmy.
