I am getting ready to put my ALH engine back together after an engine bay fire. The head was pulled to have it cleaned and checked and the head gasket was foolishly thrown away without taking note of the thickness. No machining was performed on the head and nothing altered on the bottom end, anyone know what the factory gasket thickness (# of holes) is?
it has to be measured by piston protrusion, which can be determined using a straightedge and feeler guage
The majority of the ALH which I repaired had 2 notch, but I saw some one with 3 notch.
2 or 3 notch you will not see a noticeable difference, thus buy a 3 notch.
I had installed a 3 notch + a part of another gasket on my ALH (4 notch  )
Agreed, in a jam certainly you can use the 3notch on everything, but if you have the tools, why not measure and get the right one..
It ensures optimal compression etc.
