I just was doing a routine check on my car today and noticed that there is a thin layer of oil on top on the coolant in the resevoir. I just did the headgasket in May when I bought the car. I just changed the heater core as well a couple of weeks ago and it had some kind of oil on it that smelled really bad for a while until it burned off. Could it be that? Temps have been good lately, oil consumption is a litre every 3000kms and coolant isnt going down and no coolant in the oil. By the way its a 1994 1.9TD Golf. Oh and before I forget I did put quite a bit of bars leak in when the heater core started leaking to get me home. Is it more likely the oil cooler?

it could be the oil cooler or w/e oil that was left over that you're talking about. the oil cooler is an easy fix.

yea... easy fix for those without A/C... i managed to do it with my a/c lines still in place (because i had just put in a new condensor/receiver drier AND charged it with gas $$$$ and it WORKED!), but it took me the better part of a day to do it, and luckily i'm a very patient man. :evil:
when the oil cooler went in my car i didn't notice oil in my expansion tank at first. after doing a flush i saw a bit of oil around the expansion tank inside. the main issue i had was coolant pressure bleeding into the oil system creating enough pressure to pop off my oil fill cap. :shock: yea pretty scary lol... i was really giving her though! was wondering why the motor ran like crap... then checked the oil to find that it had gone up considerably. step 1: drain oil IMMEDIATELY. :lol:
I had oil in my expansion tank and at high temps it was much worse. The seal at the head gasket was letting a little oil into the coolant but it didn't go the other way with mine. As long as you monitor temps and oil and coolant levels and consistancy you should be good to drive. It will either get better or worse and you can deal with it.
